Male vocal behavior and phylogeny in deer

چکیده
Thephylogenetic relationships among11 species of theCervidae familywere inferred fromananalysis ofmale vocalizations. Eighteen characters, including call types (e.g. antipredator barks, mating loudcalls) and acoustic characteristics (call composition, fundamental frequency and formant frequencies), were used for phylogeny inference. The resulting topology and the phylogenetic consistency of behavioral characters were compared with those of current molecular phylogenies of Cervidae and with separate and simultaneous parsimony analyses of molecular and behavioral data. Our results indicate that male vocalizations constitute plausible phylogenetic characters in this taxon. Evolutionary scenarios for the vocal characters are discussed in relation with associated behaviors. The Willi Hennig Society 2008.

Variability of Female Responses to Conspecific vs. Heterospecific Male Mating Calls in Polygynous Deer: An Open Door to Hybridization?
Males of all polygynous deer species (Cervinae) give conspicuous calls during the reproductive season. The extreme interspecific diversity that characterizes these vocalizations suggests that they play a strong role in species discrimination. However, interbreeding between several species of Cervinae indicates permeable interspecific reproductive barriers. This study examines the contribution o...
متن کاملContext-Related Acoustic Variation in Male Fallow Deer (Dama dama) Groans
While social and behavioural contexts are known to affect the acoustic structure of vocal signals in several mammal species, few studies have investigated context-related acoustic variation during inter-sexual advertisement and/or intra-sexual competition. Here we recorded male fallow deer groans during the breeding season and investigated how key acoustic parameters (fundamental frequency and ...
متن کاملRoaring High and Low: Composition and Possible Functions of the Iberian Stag's Vocal Repertoire
We provide a detailed description of the rutting vocalisations of free-ranging male Iberian deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus, Hilzheimer 1909), a geographically isolated and morphologically differentiated subspecies of red deer Cervus elaphus. We combine spectrographic examinations, spectral analyses and automated classifications to identify different call types, and compare the composition of t...
متن کاملVocal rate as an assessment process during fallow deer contests.
Two types of model propose that strategic decisions during contests are determined either by (i) a mutual-assessment process or (ii) a self-assessment process. Vocal signals are thought to convey information about the competitive abilities of individuals, the ultimate function of which is a reduction in costs associated with fighting consistent with the principle of mutual assessment. متن کاملBehavior pattern as the indicator of reproductive success of Alpine musk deer
To establish the behavioral indicator of reproductive success of female captive Alpine musk deer(Moschus sifanicus), the focal sampling was used to record the individual behaviors at Xinglongshan MuskDeer Farm (XMDF), Gansu province, China. Conducted between June 2008 and January 2009, 31 adultfemales were observed, of which 26 had successfully bred in the previous year, and five of which wereb...
